Plan on attending the Kentucky Derby Party & Auction at the American Legion in Manchester for a very fun and lively night. The $30 ticket includes a live screening of the race, buffet dinner, live and silent auctions, as well as prizes for the best “his” and “her” Derby Day hats. The event is the Manchester-Essex Rotary Club’s largest annual fundraiser. Each year, the Club awards several thousand dollars in scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Essex and Manchester. We are asking the community to support us in this effort. Do you have an unusual item for auction? A painting or antique piece of jewelry, sports tickets, or a time-share that you won’t be using? Senator Bruce Tarr, our auctioneer, will turn your item into gold for some deserving students starting college. Buy tickets at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4194906 |

Volunteer Case Reviewers
Jun 12, 2019 7:30 AM
Veronica Marciniak Lisa Brown is the Director of Volunteers for the Foster Care Review Unit at DCF. They have a unique state-wide volunteer opportunity and are working to increase our recruitment efforts. She is hoping our organization may be able to help amplify this opportunity. The Department of Children and Families offers a unique opportunity for community volunteers who would like to make a difference in a foster child's life. For a few hours of your time each month, you can participate on a panel that helps plan a brighter future for each child in care. DCF is required by law to review each foster child's case every six months. The review is conducted by a three member panel, with one member being from the local community. A volunteer reviewer can make a difference for child. Volunteer Case Reviewers must be 18 years old, submit to a background check and make a one year commitment (can be academic year) to the program- volunteer case reviewers need only complete a minimum of one case per month (or you can complete up to 12 each month). The schedules are flexible and happen Monday-Friday during business hours. Please feel free to share with anyone you think might make a great candidate for this unique volunteer opportunity. The attached PDF can also be printed and posted. Our website includes information and an online application. https://www.mass.gov/dcf- Thank you for the work you do supporting our community. Jun 29, 2019 7:30 AM - 11:00 AM
This year is the 30th annual Breakfast and traditional start of the Fourth of July holiday. Save the date for Saturday, June 29, rain or shine, 7:30am-11am at Tuck’s Point. The Manchester-Essex Rotary Club needs volunteers to host this event. We have many returning workers, most notably Sen. Bruce Tarr and Rep. Brad Hill who return every year to flip pancakes. We welcome all volunteers, new faces and regulars. Please email RSVP@manchesteressexrotary.org to help us plan. Students in need of community service hours are welcome. Parking is free and open to out-of-towners that day. Look for Rotarians selling tickets in front of the Post Office and Crosby’s Saturday mornings, 9am-noon, or stop in at the Parks & Rec Department, Peoples Bank or Nor’East Frameworks. Tickets are $9 in advance, $10 the day of the event. Children 8 and under are free. Free parking at Tuck’s Point for this event. This breakfast is a true-blue slice of Americana and draws crowds of all ages, townies and newcomers alike. Start or continue a tradition with your family by volunteering to serve at this event. You can also call Dot at 526-8040 and leave a message.

Her novel "Post Bliss"
Aug 14, 2019 7:15 AM
Faye Passanisi, a local author who has recently published her latest work, Port Bliss. PORT BLISS is the writing debut for both Bill Allen and Faye Passanisi. "Bliss" is defined as perfect happiness ~ great joy. And in spite of adversity, in fact "because" of adversity, we see how one can have bliss when things go wrong and don't work out the way we planned. In the pages of this compelling faith-based novel, you will find some historical happenings as well as some factual events with the fishing industry making history to this day. Add a little romance, sea tragedies and personal loss as well as a whole lot of inspiration. |

Author of "The Jared Monti Story"
Oct 09, 2019
I’ve written a book called “See You on the High Ground: The Jared Monti Story” about a special person who exemplified “Service above Self.” I’d like to give a 20-minute presentation of his incredible story at a Rotary meeting and be available to sign copies afterward. Here’s a summary: Jared Monti graduated from Bridgewater-Raynham High School, volunteered for the U.S. Army and was deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11. When his patrol came under attack by an overwhelming force of insurgents on a remote mountain, the SFC attempted not once but three times to rescue a squad member from the “kill zone” declaring, “He’s my guy. I’m going to get him.” In doing so, Jared likely saved the lives of all those in his patrol since the enemy focused fire on him. With the Americans dangerously low on ammunition, he was able to give them the one thing they needed - time for air support to arrive . Upon suffering a direct hit from an RPG, the 30-year-old recited the “Lord’s Prayer” as he lay dying. His last words were, “I’ve made peace with God. Tell my family I love them.” Jared was posthumously presented with the Medal of Honor in 2009, the first for a MA resident since the Viet Nam War. His father, my childhood friend, continues to drive Jared’s pickup truck every day to try to feel close to his son. That led to “I Drive Your Truck” which became the #1 country song in America and won both the CMA and ACM “Song of the Year.” The soldier known as “The Gift of God” to the Afghanis died a heroic death but, more importantly, lived a heroic life. This is the inspiring story of that life. As a consultant for 30 years, Len Sandler developed and delivered more than 3,000 leadership training seminars for many of the country’s largest and most successful organizations. Formerly an adjunct professor at Boston Univ.’s School of Mgmt., he holds a B.S. in Psychology, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior. He is the author of five books:
